Biofilters
Innovative
and durable stainless steel biofilters for cell and tissue culture process
applications
Biopharmaceutical processes, in which particulate material is held in
suspension, require filters to separate the particles or even cells from the
cell culture fluids. We have developed a solution to this problem which offers
long lasting filter performance and in an optimal application allows
separation of microcarrier beads from whole cells at harvest. In contrast, the
commonly used woven wire screen clogs (or blinds) in microcarrier operations.
This innovative filter
product presents a "two dimensional" surface to the particles being
filtered that all but eliminates blinding. This filter is made by spirally
winding triangular shaped wire to form a cylinder with the wire apex pointing
inward (in custom configurations the apex can be made to point outward). As a
result, media and the cells being harvested are drawn through the slots
between the vee-wires and are siphoned through the center of the filter.
Gravitation alone is sufficient to remove debris which clings lightly on the
periphery of the filter and the microcarriers remain inside the bioreactor to
be discarded or reused. These filters are available in a variety of sizes and
configurations generally ranging from diameters of 2 cm to 2 meters and
lengths of 5 cm to 12 meters.
Applications
Biofilters
are typically employed in bioreactor vessels, of any size, utilized as a
harvester cap for roller-bottles, or permanently attached to a harvester wand
which is used to siphon process fluids from a large harvest tank (U.S. Patent
4,880,140).
Nonblinding ourl biofilters can improve process efficiencies by reducing
downtime considerably and increase the convenience of using microcarriers in
cell culture work. Response from our customers has indicated these filters can
continue to function effectively after three months in service in conditions
that would blind a traditional woven mesh filter within a month.
